Some sessions are worth the wait, and Francis and Caroline’s Oatlands Engagement Session Leesburg was certainly one of them.

After having to reschedule earlier in the month because of the Canadian wildfire smoke and the threat of thunderstorms, we were so grateful to be welcomed by the most beautiful summer evening at Oatlands Historic House and Gardens in Leesburg, Virginia. The soft golden light and perfect weather made it feel like everything had fallen into place exactly as it was meant to.

From the moment we stepped into the gardens, it felt like we had wandered into the pages of *The Secret Garden*. Every winding pathway, blooming flower, and hidden corner created the perfect backdrop as we explored the property together. It’s easy to see why Oatlands Historic House and Gardens is one of the most beautiful locations for an engagement session in Northern Virginia. One of my favorite parts of every engagement session is watching couples become more and more comfortable in front of my camera, and Francis and Caroline were no exception. As the evening went on, their nerves melted away, their laughter became effortless, and their genuine connection shined through every image.

We wandered through the layered gardens, soaked in the gorgeous golden light, they danced together on the back porch, and shared so many laughs along the way. These moments are exactly why I love engagement sessions so much. They aren’t just about beautiful photographs—they’re about slowing down, spending intentional time together, and allowing me to get to know each couple before their wedding day.

After spending the evening photographing Francis and Caroline, I loved hearing about their engagement this past May after four wonderful years of dating. They are already excitedly planning their May 2027 wedding at Birkby House.

And can we talk about Caroline’s engagement ring? It is truly one I will never forget. Set in the most delicate and elegant setting is a breathtaking lavender sapphire that is both timeless and incredibly unique. Since purple is Caroline’s favorite color, she plans to weave beautiful touches of lavender and purple throughout their wedding day, making every detail feel deeply personal.

Francis and Caroline’s Oatlands Engagement Session Leesburg was such a joy to photograph, and I left the evening with so much appreciation for the love and joy they share.
