Ben & Mackenzie’s Romantic Oatlands Engagement Session | Leesburg, Virginia Engagement Photographer
There’s just something special about photographing two people who are completely at ease with each other. From the very beginning of Ben and Mackenzie’s engagement session at Oatlands Historic House and Gardens, it was obvious that these two share the kind of connection that feels effortless, joyful, and genuine.
A Virginia Tech Love Story
Ben and Mackenzie met while attending Virginia Tech, and honestly… there’s just something about the Hokie community that is truly one of a kind. The friendships, traditions, and connections formed there run deep, and these two are such a beautiful example of that. Their relationship carries that same warmth and loyalty that Hokies are known for, and getting to hear little pieces of their story throughout the session made me even more excited for their wedding day next spring.
Starting Their Engagement Session in the Rain
When we first arrived at Oatlands, we were greeted with a light rain shower. Instead of letting it throw us off, we embraced it and started the session tucked under the charming back porch of the manor house. Honestly, it could not have been more perfect.
The cozy setting gave us the chance to ease into the session naturally, and Ben and Mackenzie were absolute naturals in front of the camera from the very beginning. They laughed easily together, leaned into every moment, and made my job incredibly easy.
A Sweet Reminder That Loved Ones Are Always Near
One of the most meaningful moments of the evening came when Mackenzie shared that her late Poppy always looked out for her. She smiled and said she was certain he would be watching over them and making sure the rain would stop.
And not long after that… it did.
It’s hard not to pause and appreciate moments like that. The skies cleared beautifully, and we were able to wander through the breathtaking gardens just as everything seemed to come alive around us.
Spring Blooms at Oatlands Historic House and Gardens
The gardens at Oatlands were absolutely stunning for this session. The peonies and irises were fully in bloom, adding the softest pops of color throughout their portraits. Everywhere we turned felt romantic and timeless.
One of my favorite parts of the evening was when these two were completely willing to wander out into the open field with the mountain views in the distance. The combination of the rolling landscape, spring blooms, and the way they looked at each other made every frame feel effortless and genuine.
Practicing Their Wedding Day Dip
One thing that absolutely had to make an appearance during their session? The dip.
Ben and Mackenzie shared that they’ve actually been practicing their wedding day dip ahead of next May, which honestly made me laugh because that level of commitment is amazing. So naturally, we had to practice photographing it too!
And let me just say… they nailed it.
Those playful, in-between moments are always some of my favorites because they reflect what this season is really about — learning how to simply enjoy being together. Their willingness to have fun, trust the process, and fully lean into the moment made the entire session feel so natural and joyful.
Mackenzie’s One-of-a-Kind Engagement Ring
We ended the session by capturing Mackenzie’s absolutely stunning engagement ring — and the story behind it made it even more meaningful.
While shopping for a gift in her hometown in Pennsylvania, Mackenzie came across a vintage-inspired ring setting that she completely fell in love with and simply couldn’t forget. Later, she told Ben about the ring and how much she loved it.
Not long after, Ben traveled back to Pennsylvania himself so he could purchase the setting and carefully choose the perfect center stone to have placed inside it. Such a thoughtful, intentional gesture that reflects who he is so well.
The result is a one-of-a-kind ring filled with meaning, history, and so much love — just like their relationship.
Looking Ahead to Their Evergreen Country Club Wedding
After spending the evening with these two, I already know their wedding day is going to be such a joy to photograph. Ben and Mackenzie are kind, grounded, fun, and so clearly excited about the life they’re building together.
I cannot wait to celebrate them next May at Evergreen Country Club
