Tyler and Meredith’s Catholic Wedding at Birkby House in Leesburg, Virginia

Some love stories begin with a first date. Tyler and Meredith’s began all the way back in second grade.

On August 22, 2026, these two became husband and wife at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Leesburg, Virginia, surrounded by the people who have loved them through so many chapters of their story. And this wedding wasn’t just the beginning of something new—it was a beautiful reminder of just how long their lives have been intertwined.

A Hope Flower Farm Proposal to a Northern Virginia Wedding

My own little chapter in Tyler and Meredith’s story began when Tyler reached out and asked me to photograph his proposal to Meredith at Hope Flower Farm. Getting to witness that moment was such a gift, and later I had the chance to spend even more time with the two of them in Washington, DC, for their engagement session.

By the time their wedding day arrived, it felt especially sweet to be there documenting another huge milestone for them.

We’re also connected through a family friend, which made their wedding feel even more familiar. I LOVE wedding days where I look around and recognize so many faces—former brides I’ve photographed, friends of past brides, and people I’ve gotten to know through years of photographing weddings. It turns the day into a mini reunion, and it is always so much fun!

But my history with Tyler and Meredith is nothing compared to their history together.

A Catholic Love Story That Started in Second Grade

Tyler and Meredith were born only 13 hours apart, but it would be a few years before their paths officially crossed.

They met as second graders during religious formation class at St. John’s. At just seven years old, they received their First Communion together, never imagining that years later they would stand in that same church, receiving Communion again—this time during the sacrament of their marriage.

What a beautiful reminder of God’s perfect timing and the way He can weave two lives together long before we understand the story He is writing.

Life eventually took them in different directions, but in 2020, right in the middle of the uncertainty and isolation of COVID, Tyler and Meredith reconnected. The two little second graders who had once sat in religious formation class together were suddenly getting to know one another in an entirely new way.

And six years later, they were back at St. John’s—this time as bride and groom.

A Sweet Wedding Morning with Meredith and Her Sisters

Another relationship that was so special to witness throughout the day was the one Meredith shares with her three beautiful sisters. There was such an obvious closeness between them, and I loved watching the way they surrounded Meredith, celebrated her, and stepped in for all of those little moments throughout the day.

And then there was the veil!

Meredith wore the most stunning, sweeping veil, and her sisters quickly became the official veil crew! Watching the three of them take charge—arranging it, carrying it, fluffing it, and making sure it was picture-perfect—was so much fun.

Those are the kinds of moments I love on wedding days because they’re about so much more than a beautiful photograph. They capture the relationships and people who make the day what it is.

Meredith’s veil was gorgeous, but seeing her sisters lovingly fuss over her and make sure every inch of it was just right made those moments even sweeter.

One of the most meaningful details of their Catholic wedding ceremony was the priest who celebrated their marriage. Their childhood priest returned to St. John the Apostle Catholic Church to witness Tyler and Meredith become husband and wife, bringing yet another piece of their shared history full circle.

His homily was unforgettable—equal parts sentimental and humorous, filling the church with both emotion and laughter.

Meaningful Catholic Wedding Traditions and the Sacrament of Marriage

But perhaps nothing captured the significance of the day quite like watching Tyler and Meredith receive Communion together.

They had done this before, side by side, as seven-year-old children experiencing their First Communion. On their wedding day, they approached the Eucharist again, now as husband and wife, having just entered into the sacrament of marriage.

It was one of those moments that seemed to hold their entire story at once—the childhood they shared, the years apart, the unexpected reconnection, and the life they were choosing to build together.

As a photographer, these are the moments that remind me just how meaningful it is to document a Catholic wedding. There is so much more happening than what simply looks beautiful in a photograph. There is tradition, family history, faith, and the sacredness of two people entering into a lifelong covenant together.

Perfect Wedding-Day Weather in Northern Virginia

And then there was the weather.

Let’s just say many rosaries had been prayed for good weather leading up to this day, and those prayers were answered in the most perfect way.

We had overcast skies when we needed that soft, beautiful light for portraits, sunshine breaking through to brighten some of the sweetest moments, and then—because apparently this day needed one more unforgettable ending—rain at night.

But more on that in a minute.

A Birkby House Wedding Reception in Downtown Leesburg

After the ceremony, everyone headed into historic downtown Leesburg to celebrate at Birkby House.

This historic Leesburg property dates back to 1770 and combines the character of its Main House and gardens with spaces like the Carriage House and glass Conservatory. It gave Tyler and Meredith that wonderful mix of historic Virginia charm and an elegant space to celebrate with all of their favorite people.

There is something especially sweet about celebrating a marriage in a place filled with history when the couple themselves shares so much history.

Personal Wedding Details and a Special Appearance from Scout

Of course, there was one very important guest who needed to be part of the celebration: Scout!

Tyler and Meredith made sure their dog was woven into the details of their wedding day, but Scout didn’t just get an honorary mention. He made a special appearance during cocktail hour!

I always love when couples find ways to include the pieces of their everyday life that matter most to them. Those personal details are what make a wedding feel unmistakably like their wedding, and Scout absolutely deserved his moment.

The evening at Birkby House was filled with the kind of energy you hope for on a wedding day—family, friends, familiar faces, laughter, and so much history all coming together in one place.

And then came the rain.

By the end of the night, the skies finally opened, but instead of taking anything away from the celebration, the rain gave us one of my favorite parts of the entire day.

Tyler and Meredith still had their sparkler exit, now with the rain adding an extra layer of magic to the photographs. And as they headed toward their after party, we took advantage of the moment for some epic portraits right in the street.

Rain coming down. Downtown Leesburg around them. Newly married.

And one seriously amazing dip.

It was the kind of ending you could never perfectly plan—and probably wouldn’t have planned!—but somehow it fit their day beautifully.

A Full-Circle Catholic Wedding Day in Northern Virginia

From meeting as children, to receiving their First Communion together, to reconnecting during COVID, to returning to the church where so much of their shared history began, Tyler and Meredith’s story is such a reminder that sometimes the person who becomes part of your future has actually been woven into your story for much longer than you realized.

Tyler and Meredith, what a gift it was to witness this chapter—and to have been there for a few of the chapters leading up to it.

From a surprise proposal at Hope Flower Farm, to exploring DC for their engagement session, to watching you receive Communion together as husband and wife, to ending the night dancing through the rain in the streets of Leesburg… what a story.

And what a beautiful, full-circle beginning to your marriage.
